Traffic Update
This page contains information on lane restrictions that may be present during road construction in the City of Rio Rancho. Information will be updated on this page as it becomes available. Motorists traveling within construction zones are urged to drive with caution and observe traffic control devices. Remember to always wear your seat belt and drive the speed limit.

Current Road Construction:


  • Idaho Creek Water Line Replacement Project:  Road work may continue on weekends, but is usually between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.  During road work detour routes will be noted with signs.
    • Paving for the water line replacement will be on Monday, March 9, 2015 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.  Please note that there will be limited access to Idaho Creek because of the paving.
    • Road Closure and Detour PDF.

  • New Mexico 528 Widening Project: Work is done by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and may require roadway lane restrictions between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday- Friday.
    • Final paving will occur in spring 2015 as temperatures allow.

  • Water line installation on Northern Boulevard:  There is a water line being installed next to Northern Boulevard.  Road work is usually between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
    • Detours will be noted with signs.  Detours can change daily, depending on work.
    • Please obey all reduced speed limits and watch for workers in the roadway areas.
    • Any major road closures, or other information on this project, will be posted here as information becomes available.

Speed Map:
  • A real time speed data map has been created for the roads Unser Boulevard (from Westside Boulevard to Paseo del Volcan) and Southern Boulevard (from Lisbon Avenue to NM 528).
  • This map is updated every 5 minutes.
  • Key:
    • Blue is fast (above the speed limit)
    • Green is normal (around the speed limit)
    • Yellow is below normal (below the speed limit)
    • Orange is slow (significantly below the speed limit)
    • Red is extremely slow (traffic is at a crawl)
