Hiring Testing Process
Note: We will not be testing for Cadets until Spring 2013, but we are always accepting applications. Lateral testing will occur in the Fall 2012 or Winter 2012-2013.

Applying
To apply for the position as a Firefighter for the City of Rio Rancho, you must possess a current Emergency Medical Technician license (Basic, Intermediate or Paramedic).

You must be 21 years of age to become a Rio Rancho Fire Fighter.

If you are applying for a position as a "Lateral Firefighter", you must be certified as an IFSAC Firefighter II or New Mexico Firefighter II.


Written Test

All candidates will be given two written tests:
        1.  Candidate must pass the Firefighter Selection Test Emergency Medical
             Services with at least 80% in all testing categories (Listening compre-
             hension, Reading comprehension, and Mathematics).
        2.  Candidate must pass an Emergency Medical Technician Basic exam with
             a minimum of 70%.

        Note:  If candidate is a "Lateral" applicant, they are required to take and 
        pass a Firefighter II exam with a minimum of 70%.

Physical Agility Test
  • Work Capacity Test (WCT)
    • 3-mile hike with 45 lb pack in 45 minutes.

Oral Boards
A three person oral review consisting of applicant’s personal history, career preparation, and situational questions.

Background Investigation
An extensive background check will be conducted. Investigators will review: applicants job history, criminal background, credit check, driving history, and personal history evaluation.

Medical Physical
All candidates must pass an extensive medical physical before attending fire academy.



Chief's Selection Process
The Fire Chief will then select candidates to attend fire academy.
