Acts of Kindness Day

Acts of Kindness Day Message: Bullying, Begone!

When a community takes a stand, it truly can become a better place to live.  That’s the message of the Rio Rancho Public Schools Anti-Bullying Committee and City of Rio Rancho Acts of Kindness Day, Saturday, April 5, 12 PM to 3 PM at Haynes Park across from Intel.   In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Rio Rancho High School gymnasium.

The goal of Acts of Kindness Day is simple: to get people to think about how they treat one another and encourage a culture of civility in our community, with the ultimate objective of banishing bullying and making Rio Rancho a kinder place to live.

The event draws its inspiration from Rachel’s Challenge, a program which urges teens to strive for an atmosphere of kindness and compassion in schools and to reject bullying and violence.  Rachel’s Challenge is named in honor of Rachel Scott, one of the students killed in the Columbine High School shootings in 1999.

This is the second year the city and school district have teamed up to promote Acts of Kindness Day.  Lots of fun and informative family activities are in store, including:

n  Creating a “chain of kindness” where participants can write down something kind they did for someone on a strip of paper which will become a link in the chain

n  A pledge booth where participants can write down a pledge of something kind they plan to do for someone else

n  Musical performances by a variety of RRPS performing groups

n  An opportunity for businesses and organizations to have a table or booth to promote ways in which their employees/members have given back to the community

n  Children’s games and activities

n  Guest speakers

n  Food booth with hamburgers and hot dogs for sale at a very reasonable rate
