Youth Commission
2013/2014 School Year
The commission consisted of 10 high school students; five from the Rio Rancho High School student government class and five from the Cleveland High School student government class.

Appointments to the 2013/2014 Youth Commission will take place at the start of the school year and will be selected by students from their respective student government classes.

The commission meets approximately once per month during the school year, and receives a presentation related to municipal government from city of Rio Rancho staff.  Following these meetings, the five representatives from each high school give a presentation/update to their student government class summarizing their previous commission meeting and what was discussed.

On a semi-regular basis, the commission attends a Rio Rancho Governing Body meeting at Rio Rancho City Hall and updates the Governing Body on commission meetings and the presentations they have received, and provides information and updates regarding projects/initiatives each high school student council/student government class is undertaking and/or recently completed.

Background
The creation of a Youth Commission stems from an agreement between Rio Rancho Public Schools and the city of Rio Rancho that originated in 2008.  Mayor Tom Swisstack proposed the creation of a youth body to engage and educate the city’s next generation of leaders.
