Background The purpose of the Youth Governing Body is to advise Mayor Tom Swisstack and the Rio Rancho City Council about issues of concern as well as promote ideas from the city's youth. The Youth Governing Body will also complete community projects that benefit the city.
“I commend every student who sought election to serve on the Youth Governing Body,” said Mayor Swisstack. “I look forward to working with these students, hearing their ideas, and establishing a direct line of communication to city government for the youth in our community.”
The creation of a Youth Governing Body stems from an agreement between Rio Rancho Public Schools and the city of Rio Rancho. Mayor Swisstack proposed the creation of a youth governing body to engage and educate the city’s next generation of leaders.
During the fall of 2008, students from the city’s mid-high school and high school elected a youth mayor and six youth city councilors. This group comprised the first Youth Governing Body. In future years, Youth Governing Body members will be elected from both 11th- and 12th-grade Rio Rancho and Cleveland High School students.
