Traffic Update
This page contains information on lane restrictions that may be present during road construction in the City of Rio Rancho. Information will be updated on this page as it becomes available. Motorists traveling within construction zones are urged to drive with caution and observe traffic control devices. Remember to always wear your seat belt and drive the speed limit.

Current Road Construction:

  • Westside Boulevard Phase II Project:  Road work will can be 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, or even during the weekends.  During road work lane closures will be noted with signs.
    • Work begins: April 6, 2015.
    • Estimated end of work is the end of August 2015.

  • New Mexico 528 Widening Project: Work is done by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and may require roadway lane restrictions between 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., Monday- Friday.
    • Final paving will occur in spring 2015 as temperatures allow.

  • Northern Boulevard: Road work will be on the Westbound side of Northern Boulevard between Arapahoe Drive and just past Loma Colorado Boulevard to install new fiber optic cable.
    • Construction will be April 8 - April 17, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.
    • The right hand lane will be closed during work hours and speeds will be reduced to 35 mph.
    • Please obey all detours, reduced speeds, and watch out for workers on the road.

  • Northern and Rockaway Traffic Signal Construction: Northern Boulevard and Rockaway Boulevard will be getting a new traffic signal.  The underground work will be completed first, then there will be a suspension of approximately four weeks while equipment arrives before the project can be completed.  Information on this project will be updated as information arrives.
    • Beginning construction on the traffic signal has been completed.  The remaining construction has been suspended, to wait for the remaining materials to arrive.  Construction will restart at the end of May and continue for an additional four weeks.

  • Intersection Modification:  The intersections of 16th Avenue SE and Grande Boulevard SE, and 18th Avenue SE and Grande Boulevard SE will be modified to improve sight and safety for motorists.  The intersections will not be shut down, they will be manned by flaggers during the presence of the construction crews.  Citizen cooperation, in attempting to utilize alternative routes, during the construction is greatly appreciated.  The desired end result is for a safer commute for residents in the area.
    • Construction will begin around or on April 6, 2015 and last approximately two weeks.  Construction can be Monday - Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

    • 16th Avenue and Grande Boulevard:
      • Approximately 115 feet of partition wall and shrubbery to the north of the intersection will be removed and the landscaped area will be graded to reduce its elevation to within 30 inches of the adjacent road.  This will allow drivers turning off of 16th Avenue SE onto Grande Avenue SE to have a better view of oncoming southbound traffic on Grande Boulevard SE.

    • 18th Avenue and Grande Boulevard:
      • Approximately 79 feet of partition wall and shrubbery to the north of the intersection will be removed and the landscaped area will be graded to reduce its elevation to within 30 inches of the adjacent road.  This will allow drivers turning off of 18th Avenue SE onto Grande Avenue SE to have a better view of oncoming southbound traffic on Grande Boulevard SE.

  • Riverview Drive:  There will be mill and inlay work being done on this road.  This means that the contractor, Star Paving, will mill out two inches of the existing road surface and place back new asphalt in the areas that have been removed.
    • Work will begin Tuesday April 14, 2015 and last approximately three weeks.
    • There will be work on the shoulder first, and then there will be lane closures to do the mill and inlay.  The mill and inlay will be done the same day so there will be no drop off or uneven milled surfaces.
    • Please observe any detours, road closures, or reduced speeds.  Please also watch out for workers in the road.
